What size dumpster do I need for my roof's squares and layers?
A 10- or 15-yard dumpster fits small roofs, and a 20- or 30-yard dumpster fits larger tear-offs. One square is 100 square feet of roof. Multiply squares by layers by your bundle weight. The table below assumes 70-lb bundles at 3 per square, so one square of one layer is about 210 lb.
| Roof size | Layers | Example weight (210 lb per square per layer) | Size to start with | Included tons | Weight vs included |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 squares | 1 | 2,100 lb (about 1.05 tons) | 10-yard | 2 | Under |
| 15 squares | 1 | 3,150 lb (about 1.6 tons) | 15-yard | 2.5 | Under |
| 10 squares | 2 | 4,200 lb (about 2.1 tons) | 15-yard | 2.5 | Under |
| 20 squares | 1 | 4,200 lb (about 2.1 tons) | 20-yard | 3 | Under |
| 25 squares | 1 | 5,250 lb (about 2.6 tons) | 20-yard | 3 | Under |
| 30 squares | 1 | 6,300 lb (about 3.15 tons) | 30-yard | 4 | Under |
| 20 squares | 2 | 8,400 lb (about 4.2 tons) | 30-yard | 4 | About 0.2 tons over |
| 30 squares | 2 | 12,600 lb (about 6.3 tons) | 30-yard or two loads | 4 per load | About 2.3 tons over in one load |
These are starting points, not promises. Your real weight depends on the bundle weight printed on your wrapper, plus felt, nails, flashing and any decking. Volume also matters: a small 10-yard can fill up before it reaches 2 tons. Read the 20-yard dumpster details or the 30-yard dumpster details before you book.

Call now (281) 673-4344How do I work out the weight of my old shingles?
Shingle weight equals squares × layers × bundles per square × bundle weight. Read the weight printed on your bundle wrapper. If your bundles weigh 70 lb and a square takes 3 bundles, one square of one layer is 210 lb. A 25-square roof with one layer is then about 5,250 lb, or 2.6 tons.
Worked overage example
A 20-square roof with two layers is 20 × 2 × 210 lb = 8,400 lb, about 4.2 tons. In a 30-yard dumpster with 4 tons included, the extra is about 0.2 tons. At $75 per ton, that is about $15.
The landfill's digital scale ticket sets the real number. Overage is billed pro-rata by the exact pound, not rounded up to a full ton. See how dumpster weight is billed for how the ticket works.
When will the roofing dumpster arrive before my crew starts?
Book by 3:00 PM for next-day delivery, between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Because that window runs all day, book by 3 PM two days before tear-off. The dumpster then lands the day before your crew climbs up. The driver texts or calls 20–30 minutes before arrival.
You don't have to be home for delivery if the spot is clear and marked. Same-day requests carry a $50 rush fee and only work when a truck is open, so don't plan a tear-off around one.
Where should the roofing dumpster go on my property?
The roofing dumpster should sit as close to your main drop zone as the truck can reach, usually the driveway near the roof edge you strip first. The truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance. Wooden boards go under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.
- Keep the bin off septic lids, sprinkler heads, soft lawn and fresh concrete.
- Trim low branches and check for low wires over the drop spot.
- Leave room for ladders and a tarp line between the house and the bin.
If the truck can't place the bin because of blocked access, low wires or a locked gate, a $125 dry-run fee applies. Street placement may need a city permit; ask when you book and driveway placement tips.
Do I need a debris chute for a roof tear-off?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a) requires an enclosed chute when material is dropped more than 20 feet to any point outside the building's exterior walls. Measure from the drop point on the roof to the ground. Two-story and taller homes are where the drop is most likely to pass 20 feet.
That is the law for construction work. Our advice on top of it: keep people and cars clear of the drop zone, and tarp nearby shrubs and windows. Confirm with your permit office, HOA or landfill.
What happens if the roof needs a second dumpster?
A swap counts as a new standard rental. The full dumpster is hauled and weighed on its own scale ticket, and an empty one is dropped. Each rental includes 7 days, and extra days are $25 per day. On a big two-layer roof, compare one load's overage with a second rental on your quote.
Keep shingles level with the top rim. An overfilled bin can't legally be hauled, the $125 dry-run fee applies, and you remove the excess. Loading tips are in how to load a dumpster. Keep liquid roof coatings, sealants, wet paint and batteries out; hazardous chemicals are prohibited.
