Concrete and Dirt Dumpster Rental for Heavy Debris
Concrete, dirt, brick and sand go only in a 10- or 15-yard dumpster, loaded no more than halfway up the walls. Concrete weighs about 150 lb per cubic foot, so a slab can pass the 2 or 2.5 included tons fast. Clean, unmixed loads qualify for clean-fill pricing.

How much concrete fits in a 10- or 15-yard dumpster by weight?
A 10-yard dumpster includes 2 tons, or about 80 square feet of 4-inch slab. A 15-yard includes 2.5 tons, or about 100 square feet of 4-inch slab. The math is square feet × thickness in feet × about 150 lb per cubic foot. Anything over is $75 per ton.
| Slab area | Thickness | Cubic feet | About weight | Bin | Included tons | About overage at $75/ton |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 sq ft | 4 in | 16.7 | 2,500 lb (1.25 tons) | 10-yard | 2 | None |
| 80 sq ft | 4 in | 26.7 | 4,000 lb (2 tons) | 10-yard | 2 | None, right at the limit |
| 100 sq ft | 4 in | 33.3 | 5,000 lb (2.5 tons) | 15-yard | 2.5 | None, right at the limit |
| 100 sq ft | 6 in | 50 | 7,500 lb (3.75 tons) | 15-yard | 2.5 | 1.25 tons, about $93.75 |
| 200 sq ft | 4 in | 66.7 | 10,000 lb (5 tons) | 15-yard | 2.5 | 2.5 tons, about $187.50 |
Weights use about 150 lb per cubic foot for normal-weight concrete (about 2 tons per cubic yard, solid). Rebar, wire mesh and wet soil change the real number. The landfill's scale ticket decides the bill, pro-rata by the exact pound. See how dumpster weight is billed.

Call now (281) 673-4344Why can heavy debris only fill a dumpster halfway?
Concrete, dirt, brick and sand can fill a 10- or 15-yard dumpster only halfway up the walls. The halfway line keeps the load within what the truck can safely lift and carry. A bin loaded higher can't be hauled as it is, so the $125 dry-run fee applies and you remove the excess.
Even at the halfway line, a bin of broken concrete can weigh more than the included tons. Spread pieces evenly across the floor instead of piling them at one end. More tips are in how to load a dumpster.
What counts as a clean load for clean-fill pricing?
A clean load is one heavy material, unmixed: only concrete, only dirt, or only brick, with no trash, wood, plastic or roots. Clean, unmixed loads qualify for clean-fill pricing on your 10- or 15-yard dumpster. Mixing in other debris turns the load into regular mixed debris.
- Keep a separate pile for trash and wood while you break concrete.
- Pull roots and sod out of dirt loads where you can.
- Ask about clean-fill pricing when you call so your quote matches the load.
How much does dirt weigh in a dumpster?
Dirt in a dumpster is billed by the scale ticket, with 2 tons included in a 10-yard and 2.5 tons in a 15-yard. Dirt weight changes with soil type and moisture, and wet dirt weighs more than dry. Load dirt only to the halfway line and cover the bin before rain.
Overage is $75 per ton, billed by the exact pound. Example: if a 10-yard's ticket shows 2.8 tons net, you pay for 0.8 tons, which is $60. The ticket copy is attached to the final invoice, emailed 3–5 business days after pickup.
Where should a heavy-debris dumpster sit?
A heavy-debris dumpster should sit on a firm, level surface like a concrete or asphalt driveway, not soft lawn. Wooden boards go under the rails to protect the surface. The truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance.
Keep the bin off septic lids, sprinkler lines and freshly poured concrete. A heavy load on soft ground can leave ruts. Read dumpster placement on a driveway before you pick the spot.
