What size dumpster do I need for a garage, estate or move-out cleanout?
A 10- or 15-yard dumpster is the usual start for a garage or move-out cleanout, and a 20- or 30-yard is the usual start for a full estate. An 8-foot pickup bed loaded level holds about 2 to 3 cubic yards. Count how many truck loads you'd haul, then pick the size.
| Cleanout | Typical size to start with | About how many pickup loads | Included tons |
|---|---|---|---|
| One room or small move-out | 10-yard | About 3 to 5 | 2 |
| One- or two-car garage | 15-yard | About 5 to 7 | 2.5 |
| Several rooms or a packed garage and attic | 20-yard | About 7 to 10 | 3 |
| Whole-house or estate cleanout | 30-yard | About 10 to 15 | 4 |
Pickup loads are based on 2 to 3 cubic yards per 8-foot bed; sizes are labeled typical. Compare sizes in the dumpster size guide.

Wooden boards go under the dumpster's rails and rollers to protect concrete and asphalt driveways. Keep the bin off soft lawn, septic lids and sprinkler heads. The truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance to set the bin down.
Move cars, trim low branches and mark the spot before delivery day. More detail is in dumpster placement on a driveway. If there is no room in the driveway and the bin must go on the street, ask about the city's rule before booking.
What does it cost to throw out mattresses, fridges and tires?
Mattresses, tires and appliances with freon cost $50 extra per item in a cleanout dumpster. That covers refrigerators, freezers, window AC units and dehumidifiers that hold refrigerant. EPA rule 40 CFR 82.155 requires refrigerant recovery before final disposal of those appliances. Tell us the count when you book.
Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in at all. Old pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents and car batteries from a garage belong at a household hazardous waste drop-off. See the TCEQ household hazardous waste page and what you can put in a dumpster.
Is a cleanout dumpster likely to go over weight?
A cleanout dumpster includes 2 to 6 tons, and the weight usually comes from books, paper files, tile, dirt, brick and anything soaked by rain. Furniture, clothes and boxes are bulky for their weight. Extra weight is $75 per ton, billed pro-rata by the exact pound from the landfill's digital scale ticket.
Cover the bin with a tarp if rain is coming, because wet debris weighs more. The scale ticket copy comes with the final invoice, emailed 3–5 business days after pickup. Details are in how dumpster weight is billed.
How long do I get to finish an estate cleanout?
Every cleanout dumpster rental includes 7 days. Extra days are $25 per day after that. If the bin fills before the house is empty, a swap is a new standard rental: the full bin is hauled and an empty one with fresh included tons takes its place.
Break down furniture so it lies flat, and keep debris level with the top rim. An overfilled bin can't legally be hauled, the $125 dry-run fee applies, and the extra has to come out. Tips are in how to load a dumpster.
