Roll-Off Dumpster Rental in Houston, Texas

Houston heavy trash pickup does not take contractor debris, roofing or shingles. It also caps each set-out at 8 cubic yards. For a remodel, roof tear-off or big cleanout, a roll-off in your driveway holds the debris for a 7-day rental. Driveway drops go on wood boards.

Do you need a dumpster permit in Houston?

Houston requires a Combustible Waste Storage Permit for dumpsters and roll-offs over 50 cubic feet at businesses, apartments and strip centers. Any dumpster kept on site over 60 days also needs one. A street or right-of-way rule for short home rentals was not confirmed, so call 311 before any street placement.

  • Combustible Waste Storage (Dumpster) Permit: Solid Waste Management Department, Dumpster Permitting, 832-393-0459. Apply through the Houston Permitting Center. Permits run 1 to 3 years and need an inspection. City permit page.
  • Hauler franchise: Houston City Code Chapter 39 requires commercial solid waste operators serving commercial properties to hold a city franchise. The fee is 4% of gross revenue, including roll-off rental. Residential service is exempt.

A private driveway is the simplest spot. See driveway placement tips.

Where do Houston residents take items a dumpster can't take?

Houston runs two Environmental Service Centers for household hazardous waste, at 5614 Neches St. and 11500 S. Post Oak Rd. Six neighborhood depositories take bulk items, yard waste and recyclables from Houston residents. Bring a Texas ID plus a City of Houston utility bill or lease for bulk or tree waste.

  • Environmental Service Centers (HHW): North, 5614 Neches St. (77026); South, 11500 S. Post Oak Rd. (77035).
  • Neighborhood depositories: 9003 N Main, 14400 Sommermeyer, 5565 Kirkpatrick, 2240 Central St., 5100 Sunbeam and 10785 SW Freeway. Drop-off centers page.
  • Recycling centers: Westpark (5900 Westpark), Clear Lake/Ellington (246 Loop Rd.) and Kingwood (3210 W. Lake Houston Pkwy). They take up to 5 tires without rims, plus batteries, oil, latex paint and antifreeze. Heavy trash is not accepted.
  • Reuse Warehouse: 9003 N. Main, Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Curbside tires: up to 4 passenger tires per set-out.

Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries cannot go in a roll-off. See what can go in a dumpster.

Why can't Houston heavy trash handle my remodel or roof debris?

Houston heavy trash comes every other month and takes up to 8 cubic yards per set-out. Resident building material is capped at 4 cubic yards, with no shingles, brick, plaster or concrete. Contractor debris and roofing are not collected, so the contractor must haul those away.

Set-outs may go to the curb from 6 p.m. the Friday before. After Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the city suspended yard and junk waste pickup and asked residents to bring debris to depositories. A roll-off keeps storm cleanups moving. See storm debris dumpsters and roofing dumpsters.
